Altra FWD VIA 2 vs FWD VIA: Softer, Smoother, More Refined

The Altra FWD VIA 2 takes everything runners loved about the original and smooths it out with a more refined, comfortable ride. It keeps Altra’s signature low-drop geometry and roomy Altra FootShape fit but adds an all-new EGO™ P35 midsole that’s both softer and more responsive. Combined with an updated engineered mesh upper and redesigned plush tongue, this version feels more dialled-in straight out of the box. Whether you’re chasing easy daily miles or tackling long weekend runs, the VIA 2 is built for comfort, consistency, and efficiency over any distance.

Upper

While the overall upper design remains familiar, the FWD VIA 2’s upper has been subtly but effectively refined. It still uses engineered spacer mesh, but the material is now smoother, softer, and more breathable than before — offering a cleaner fit and feel. Ventilation through the forefoot has been improved, helping the shoe run cooler on longer efforts while maintaining enough structure for a confident midfoot hold.

The redesigned plush tongue adds another layer of comfort, reducing lace pressure and giving a more premium step-in experience. Around the heel, padding has been slightly reshaped for a better lockdown without losing that relaxed Altra comfort.

Fit remains true to the brand’s Original FootShape™ Fit, giving toes plenty of room to spread naturally while the midfoot feels a touch more dialled-in than the original. It’s a subtle evolution — the same breathable comfort runners liked in version 1, now more refined.

Midsole

The biggest update from the original happens underfoot. Altra has replaced the previous EGO™ FLO compound with the new EGO™ P35 midsole — designed to deliver a smoother, softer, and more responsive ride. The numbers back it up: 19% softer and 15% more responsive than before.

On the run, that translates to a noticeably cushier landing and a more energetic toe-off. The geometry remains the same — a 33 mm / 37 mm stack with a 4 mm drop — preserving that stable, natural stance that VIA fans appreciate. Altra’s rocker shape geometry continues to guide you forward efficiently, giving the shoe a consistent, rolling flow over long distances.

Visually, the midsole looks almost identical to the original — the same sculpted lines and rocker profile remain — but the feel tells the story. The FWD VIA 2 delivers a plusher, more fluid ride while keeping the familiar look and balanced platform that made the first version so reliable for everyday training.

Outsole

At first glance, the outsole of the FWD VIA 2 looks very similar to the original — same overall footprint, same rocker shape, and familiar flex groove pattern. But look a little closer and there’s one key change: an additional rubber pod through the midfoot.

This new pod adds a touch more surface contact through the transition phase, giving the shoe a slightly more stable and connected feel underfoot. It works seamlessly with the rocker geometry to create a smoother roll from heel to toe, particularly noticeable at easy to moderate paces.

The rest of the outsole remains largely unchanged — durable rubber coverage through high-wear areas, consistent traction on wet and dry roads, and a reliable, planted feel. It’s a subtle but effective tweak that makes the VIA 2 feel a little more confident and fluid on the run, without adding weight or compromising durability.

First Impressions

Side by side, the FWD VIA 2 doesn’t look dramatically different from the original — and that’s a good thing. Altra has refined rather than reinvented. The new engineered spacer mesh upper feels softer and more breathable, the midsole foam delivers a smoother, more cushioned ride, and the added outsole pod through the midfoot improves connection to the ground.

On foot, it’s immediately more polished. The ride feels balanced and fluid, the fit more secure, and the comfort level higher across the board. It still delivers that max-cushioned, low-drop Altra feel — but with a livelier, more dialled-in construction.

For runners who loved the original’s geometry and stability, the FWD VIA 2 keeps everything familiar while fine-tuning the comfort and flow. It’s ideal for daily training, long runs, and recovery efforts where you want a plush yet efficient ride.

The Wrap Up

The Altra FWD VIA 2 isn’t a radical overhaul, but rather a confident evolution of a solid concept. With its refined upper, softer and more responsive EGO™ P35 midsole, and that subtle yet effective outsole tweak, it feels like a smoother, more cohesive package overall.

If you’re after a max-cushioned, low-drop road shoe that blends natural movement with all-day comfort, the VIA 2 hits the sweet spot — maintaining the DNA of the original while improving in all the right ways.
