The Running Company – Ballarat was founded in June 2016 by Julian Spence and Brianne Hook after the couple spent several years as manager and assistant manager of The Running Company – Geelong. The tight-knit running community and endless trails in the area attracted the two down the highway to share their passion for expert service and product knowledge which The Running Company stands for. The store is located in close proximity to the famous Steve Moneghetti track around Lake Wendouree and to Victoria Park’s 5km circuit which the weekly run club takes advantage of!

We try to vary it every week but it’s usually around 8-10km at varying paces so it’s inclusive for people of all abilities as opposed to exclusive and only for faster runners.
Julian brings his passion for running and footwear to Ballarat after spending several years as Manager of The Running Company – Geelong, where he learned the technical components of running footwear and developed a love for customer service. His running career really began in 2008 when he was inspired by a good mate running the Melbourne Marathon. Three weeks later he ran Portland 3-Bays Marathon and within a year he had completed the Melbourne Marathon in under 2:30. Julian has also ran several ultramarathons spanning as far as 100km, however, his love affair with the marathon distance has seen him attain numerous wins in the Great Ocean Road Marathon, as well as running his PB of 2:18:47 in the 2017 Berlin marathon.
Brianne is the co-founder of the Ballarat store after serving as the assistant store manager at The Running Company – Geelong alongside Julian. She has a degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition at Deakin University and experience in the health industry. Bri has generally been a short to middle distance runner, covering distances from 5km with a PB of 18:12 – half marathons. She has been a regular competitor on the Athletics Victoria Cross Country & Track and Field circuit and has competed in half marathons within Australia & USA. She also completed her first marathon in Berlin in 2017 with a time of 3:06:26.
Jack has been with The Running Company Ballarat since its inception in 2016. He’s a passionate triathlete, competing from sprint distance right through to Ironman distance. Jack has a Law Degree from Deakin University, however his passion for running and enthusiasm for footwear has drawn him to spend an increasing amount of time in-store. Jack also has a keen interest in mixed martial arts and the nutrition side of endurance sports.
Blake has been part of the The Running Company family since 2014, when he began working alongside Bri and Julian in Geelong. A former cyclist turned Trail Runner, Blake has been active since he was a kid throughout a myriad of sports. On the trail scene, he has run a wide variety of events both here in Australia and internationally. Competing in races such as the Mont Blanc Marathon, Transvulcania Ultramarathon and The North Face Endurance Challenge, San Francisco. He’s a lover of nature and all things outdoors, especially spending time on the coast or in the mountains. Blake is also currently studying Zoology and Animal Science at Deakin University.
As a Ballarat local Jesse is a familiar face within the running community. Running since he was 5yrs old at Little Athletics, Jesse attained some noteworthy results as a junior athlete, winning Victorian titles in both the 1500m and 3km events. Additionally, Jesse has also won Open Category Victorian Country titles in the 1500m and 5km. Whilst currently studying a law degree at Deakin University, Jesse will also take any opportunity to get away to the beach or explore the outdoors.
