The Running Company – Ballarat was founded in June 2016 by Julian Spence and Brianne Hook after the couple spent several years as manager and assistant manager of The Running Company – Geelong. The tight-knit running community and endless trails in the area attracted the two down the highway to share their passion for expert service and product knowledge which The Running Company stands for. The store is located in close proximity to the famous Steve Moneghetti track around Lake Wendouree and to Victoria Park’s 5km circuit which the weekly run club takes advantage of!

We try to vary it every week but it’s usually around 8-10km at varying paces so it’s inclusive for people of all abilities as opposed to exclusive and only for faster runners.
Julian brings his passion for running and footwear to Ballarat after spending several years as Manager of The Running Company – Geelong, where he learned the technical components of running footwear and developed a love for customer service. Julian is an elite marathon runner who represented Australia at the World Athletics Championships in Doha in 2019. Julian owns The Running Company Ballarat with his partner Bri, has his own online coaching business- Run Strong Online Coaching, is a race director, and a co-host of the Inside Running Podcast.
Julian began running in 2009 using the reverse progression method of beginning with a marathon (Portland 3 Bays Marathon in 3:04). The next few years were then riddled with injury until managing to string some consistency around 2017 when he ran the Berlin Marathon in 2:18. Since then his marathon PR has progressed to 2:14 (Lake Biwa, 2019).
Brianne is the co-founder of the Ballarat store after serving as the assistant store manager at The Running Company – Geelong alongside Julian. She has a degree in Exercise Science and Nutrition at Deakin University and experience in the health industry. Bri is a middle to long distance runner, covering distances from 5km with a PB of 17:30 – marathons. Bri broke the 3hr barrier in Berlin (2018) in a time of 2:59 and has a goal of completing the remaining 3 of the 6 world major marathons.
