For the past couple of years, the ASICS Superblast has been one of our most popular shoes of all time, and for good reason. It’s become a staple in our rotations, delivering an incredible balance of light weight, max-stack cushioning, and versatility that few other shoes can match. We’ve logged countless miles in it and watched our community fall in love with the same springy, high-energy ride.

That’s why the launch of the Megablast and Sonicblast had us genuinely excited. After wear-testing both over the past couple of months, it’s clear ASICS hasn’t just added two more models – they’ve expanded the Blast family in meaningful ways. The Megablast pushes cushioning and bounce to new heights in a max-stack package that feels softer and more playful than anything we’ve worn before. Meanwhile, the Sonicblast layers in a Pebax propulsion plate and dual-foam midsole to channel that energy into a faster, snappier ride perfect for tempos and long uptempo runs.

Together with the Superblast and Novablast, these two new models give the Blast lineup incredible depth – whether you’re chasing plush comfort, all-round versatility, or plated propulsion, there’s now a Blast built just for you.

Upper

At first glance, the uppers on the Megablast and Sonicblast look and feel fairly similar. Both use a lightweight engineered mesh with a streamlined fit that balances breathability with enough structure to support their high-stack midsoles. The Megablast keeps things simple and secure, offering a breathable daily-trainer feel that holds up well across longer runs.

Where the Sonicblast differs is in the finer details. Small perforations across the upper increase airflow and shave away a touch of weight, making it feel lighter and more performance-oriented on foot. This extra breathability not only keeps the shoe cooler on uptempo efforts but also enhances that locked-in fit that’s so important when running faster.

The tongue construction across both models will feel familiar to anyone who has worn the Superblast 2 or Novablast 5 — lightly padded, semi-gusseted, and designed to stay put without adding unnecessary bulk.

It’s worth noting that both the Megablast and Sonicblast offer a lighter, more performance-driven fit overall when compared with the Superblast 2 and Novablast 5, which use slightly thicker, more cushioned upper constructions. This makes the Megablast and Sonicblast feel more stripped-back and race-ready, while the Superblast and Novablast lean a touch more toward comfort and everyday versatility.

Midsole

Megablast

The Megablast is built around a full-length slab of FF TURBO SQUARED — ASICS’ most advanced and energetic foam to date. Marketed as an ultra bouncy compound, it’s a TPU-based material that is softer, lighter, and more responsive than anything we’ve seen previously in the Blast family. Sitting on a towering stack of 45mm in the heel and 37mm in the forefoot, it delivers an incredibly cushioned ride that feels lively and fun underfoot.

On the run, the Megablast has a noticeably springy, trampoline-like feel, with smooth transitions helped along by the rocker geometry. It feels softer and more playful than the Superblast 2, which uses FF TURBO PLUS for a slightly firmer, more versatile ride. Compared to the Novablast 5, which uses FF BLAST MAX for a balanced daily trainer feel, the Megablast leans more toward maximum bounce and high-stack comfort, sitting clearly at the “fun” end of the lineup.

Sonicblast

The Sonicblast takes the Blast concept in a more performance-driven direction. Its midsole uses a dual-layer system, with a base of FF BLAST MAX foam for cushioning and stability, topped with a layer of FF TURBO SQUARED to add responsiveness and that ultra bouncy feel. This setup creates a soft yet responsive underfoot experience, engineered to make fast training runs both comfortable and fun.

Adding to this is a ¾-length Pebax ASTROPLATE, which provides lightweight structure through the midfoot and forefoot. The plate smooths momentum through transitions and delivers a more dynamic toe-off, giving the Sonicblast a sharper, faster turnover compared to its siblings in the lineup.

Out on the run, the result is a ride that feels more structured and efficient than the Megablast. It shares a familiar underfoot feel with the Novablast 5, which also relies on FF BLAST MAX, but the Sonicblast pushes the formula further. The addition of the FF TURBO SQUARED top layer and propulsion plate makes it more aggressive and propulsive, tuned specifically for tempo runs, faster long efforts, and even race days when you want plated performance without stepping into a full carbon supershoe.

Outsole

The Megablast and Sonicblast both feature targeted ASICSGRIP rubber coverage, designed to deliver traction and durability without weighing the shoe down. On the Megablast, rubber is placed strategically in high-wear zones, adding just enough protection to the midsole to keep the weight down while still giving dependable grip for daily mileage.

Both models also carry forward ASICS’ now familiar trampoline-inspired forefoot pod, a design element seen in the Superblast 2 and Novablast 5. On the Megablast, the outsole layout most closely resembles the Superblast, emphasising lightweight protection and smooth rollover. The Sonicblast, meanwhile, mirrors the Novablast more closely, with its pod geometry working in tandem with the Pebax ASTROPLATE to deliver a snappier, more propulsive toe-off.

The result is an outsole setup that keeps weight low while still delivering the protection and durability needed for daily training and longer mileage.

Our First Impressions

After spending the last couple of months rotating between the Megablast and Sonicblast, it’s clear that ASICS has successfully expanded the Blast family without overlapping what’s already there.

The Megablast feels like the most fun daily trainer in the lineup — ultra bouncy, max cushioned, and surprisingly lightweight for such a high-stack shoe. It’s the pair we reach for when we want long miles to feel effortlessly energetic, with that trampoline-like midsole making every stride enjoyable.

The Sonicblast, on the other hand, adds a layer of sharpness to the equation. With its dual-layer midsole setup and Pebax plate, it feels smoother, faster, and more propulsive, making it the perfect option for tempo sessions, faster long runs, or runners chasing a plated ride without stepping into a full carbon race day shoe.

What’s exciting is how these two new models fit into the broader ASICS Blast family. The Superblast 2 remains the versatile workhorse — light, durable, and capable across almost any run. The Novablast 5 continues to be the reliable daily trainer with a softer, more forgiving character. Now, with the Megablast and Sonicblast, runners have two fresh flavours of bounce: one maxed-out for comfort, and one tuned for speed.

If the Superblast set the benchmark for this family, the Megablast and Sonicblast prove that ASICS isn’t just resting on a hit — they’re building a collection that can cover almost every type of run.
